Malcolm X (57), alongside Desmond Campbell Kekana (52), James Mpho Sekhaolela (45), and Raymond Mphuwa Mokaile (38) receive their liberation from confinement on October 26, after being detained since October 22. Each of them was implicated in a scandalous scheme, compelling them to front the Alexandra Magistrates Court to face two counts of corruption and extortion. They stand accused of soliciting R580,000.
Their freedom, although temporary pending their reappearance in court on November 23, came courtesy of a R10,000 bail payment, which was unexpectedly provided by Kenny Kunene - a gesture Malcolm X publicly acknowledged. According to the National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phindi Mjonodwane, the group was arrested following an accusation that they demanded money from a complainant to prevent an arrest. This saga, anchored by fraudulent immigration stamps, saw the accused allegedly ask for a sum of R2 million from the complainant. Malcolm X was reportedly the facilitator of this payment.
All four accused have pleaded not guilty to all charges, citing familial obligations as their need for bail. Kenny Kunene’s act of kindness was motivated by empathy stemming from his similar experiences and the alliance he shares with Malcolm X on various projects.
