An exhaustive investigation by the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism reveals more than a dozen individuals linked directly or indirectly to the Gupta family and its closest allies, who possess undue influence over state-owned enterprises and government policies in South Africa, particularly within mineral resources.
One key figure of note is Salim Essa, a longtime associate and business partner of the Gupta family. He is found to have direct connections with at least five board members in Eskom, one of South Africa's largest electricity public utilities. Essa also has significant ties with individuals holding sway in Transnet, another major public enterprise, and the Department of Mineral Resources.
The probe also turns the spotlight on Minister Lynne Brown's role in the appointment of seemingly biased candidates to board positions. The investigation calls into question her potential compliance or involvement with the Gupta family.
Although new claims do not provide direct evidence of wrongdoing, the potential levels of influence this network could exert adds significant gravitas to the ongoing concerns about so-called state capture.
Despite repeated attempts, the Gupta family and Essa failed to respond to the detailed queries put forward.
