The African National Congress’ (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) earlier this month, voiced its intentions to end its coalitions with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA). According to David Makhura, the party’s head of political education, the EFF, labelled as a “proto-fascist party run dictatorially,” was viewed as unfit for alliance due to its disregard for good governance and alleged involvement in corrupt practices. The initiative underlines the ANC’s urgency to reassess its relationship with the EFF, claiming that previous partnerships have negatively impacted ANC's image. The primary concern being that the EFF has exploited these coalitions to challenge ANC's social base.
Inset within the document, as seen by the Daily Maverick, the ANC revealed the EFF's growth trajectory has halted below the 20% mark. Pursuing a newfound strategy, the EFF aims to amass power via coalitions with the ANC, thereby flaistring its ability to produce results.
The ANC's disapproval extends to the PA, spurred by PA leader, Gayton McKenzie's recent comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict. McKenzie maintained his party’s willingness to cease its alliance with the ANC rather than modify its Israel-centered stance to a more Palestine-leaning one. This conflicts with the ANC's deep-rooted affinity to Palestine. Ultimately, the proposition to terminate all associations with the EFF and the PA will be endeavored to the National Task Team on Coalitions before being presented to the National Officials and the National Working Committee.
