In an unfolding situation, the European Union (EU) has commenced the necessary procedures to impose sanctions on members of the military junta in Niger. This represents a critical development in the international response to the coup that took control of Niger three months ago.

On Monday, the EU Council disclosed that it had begun the process to institute a framework that would enable it to inflict sanctions on "individuals and entities found responsible for actions that undermine the peace, stability, and security of Niger."

The sanctions are explicitly designed to target those who subvert Niger's constitutional order, democratic principles, or rule of law. Also of concern to the European Union are those involved in human rights violations or abuses, these individuals will also face the stringent sanctions.

The punitive measures designed by the EU include travel bans, freezing of assets, and restrictions on granting funds to those penalised.

EU Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, articulated the EU's endorsement for the efforts of the West African bloc, Ecowas. Displaying a united front against military coups, Borrell said, "With today's decision, the EU strengthens its support to Ecowas' efforts and sends a clear message: military coups bear costs."

Notably, the EU has accommodated possible exceptions for humanitarian reasons to the asset freezing measures, displaying consideration and sensitivity for humanitarian needs.

This decision from the European Union follows similar sanctions already enforced on Niger by Ecowas and the cessation of aid by the United States government due to the coup.
