In an unexpected turn of events, electric bikes (e-bikes) are becoming a preferred means of transportation within Amish communities.
E-bikes, known for their cost-effectiveness, speed, and eco-friendly attributes, offer a significant upgrade over traditional modes of transport. Contrary to popular belief, the Amish do not completely shun modern technology, but rather adopt a mindful and measured approach toward its utilization. The Amish community's adoption of e-bikes stems from their keen emphasis on sustainability and community integration of any new technology.
"There is no central Amish governing authority, and each individual community is allowed to make its own decisions about what type of technology it makes use of," was divulged by the official tourism website of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Amish communities tactically repurpose new technology to align with their community values and beliefs.
Electric bikes have reportedly gained acceptance within several Amish communities, primarily for their practical benefits. “It’s a lot quicker to jump on your bike and go into town than it is to bring your horse into the barn, harness it to the buggy, and go,” states David Mullett, a member of the Old Order Amish Church and owner of an e-bike shop in Ohio.
The Amish gravitate further away from technology when it fosters excess dependence on the outside world. Their selective adoption of technology also extends to utilizing solar-powered electricity generation models which they can own and manage themselves. In line with this, e-bikes can also be charged through small solar panels.
Mullett's e-bike shop, established in an off-grid setup, is entirely solar-powered, making use of around two dozen solar panels installed on its roof.
