In the latest concerning incident surrounding international rugby, Springboks Scrumhalf Cobus Reinach received a death threat on Instagram. Despite the threat, Assistant Coach Mzwandile Stick assures that Reinach is in high spirits ahead of this weekend's Rugby World Cup semi-final.
The threat came on the heels of last Sunday’s tightly-contested 29-28 quarter-final victory over France. Currently a player for French club Montpellier, Reinach, 33, received the ominous message from a disgruntled fan of the home team, France. Regardless, Reinach is set to start for the Springboks once again in this Saturday's semi-final in Paris.
According to Stick, there shouldn’t be cause for concern. “He's in a good space and he's got his family around him," Stick informed the media. He went on to commend the French rugby authorities and lauded the ‘next level’ security implemented around their hotel following the incident.
Meanwhile, England made three changes for the anticipated semi-final at Stade de France, following their 30-24 victory over Fiji. Despite these changes, Stick doesn’t anticipate any grand surprises, indicating that these were expected moves.
As the only unbeaten side in the competition, England carries the weighty expectations of their 2003 champion legacy, despite doubts over their title credentials.
Despite a mere two losses in 11 games this year, the Springboks are cautiously optimistic, underlining the unpredictable nature of knockout rugby. In the wake of criticisms towards New Zealand referee Ben O'Keeffe, England assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth expressed full trust in his ability to manage the game objectivefully.
