A hijacking and kidnapping event in Gansbaai has led to the arrest of two suspects, a male aged 24 and another aged 30, who face charges of kidnapping, hijacking, and extortion. The Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie stated that the suspects are due for a hearing at the Bredasdorp Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The terrifying event unfolded Tuesday evening when a young man, 25, and his older female confidant, 42, were carjacked at gunpoint. The male victim was coerced to withdraw money from an ATM located 70 kilometers away, in Bredasdorp.
Following the swift action to disseminate the details of the victim’s vehicle, the local police were able to spot it before 10 p.m. on Tuesday. Despite their initial attempt to flee, resulting in a high-speed chase, the police manage to corner the car. Only the female victim was found in the vehicle when it was apprehended along with the two suspects. The whereabouts of the male victim were unknown although it is believed he was left at the ATM in Bredasdorp.
The police search of the vehicle uncovered an unlicensed firearm which further incriminates the suspects. The case continues in court on Thursday.
Detained suspects and empowered law enforcement are a reassuring response to this grim and chilling incident, a beacon of hope for a safer South Africa.
