In a significant breakthrough achieved last Friday, law enforcement authorities in Western Cape arrested a 46-year-old foreign national on charges of possession of counterfeit currency. The man was caught red-handed with forged foreign currency, with a total value of a staggering R19 million.
The arrest was carried out by Western Cape police, led by Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, who noticed a suspicious vehicle in Goodwood, a suburb of Cape Town. While conducting a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a grey safe bag, which was cleverly hidden in a black bag. Upon further investigation, a blue bag brimming with American dollars was also unearthed.
Upon further scrutiny, Pojie disclosed that the foreign currency was determined to be counterfeit. Worse still, the suspect failed to provide any documentation that validated his legal status within South Africa. This revelation further deepens the severity of the case, potentially leading to additional charges.
According to police briefings, the suspect is expected to make his preliminary appearance in the Goodwood Magistrate's Court on the coming Monday. Further details concerning the case remain under wraps as the investigation continues.
