In an applaudable display of successful operations, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks teamed up in a month-long, intelligence-driven operation that led to the seizure of cocaine worth over R70 million at the Durban harbour on Wednesday.
The operation involved constant surveillance on a specific vessel travelling from Brazil to South Africa, according to the National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola. As the vessel approached the Port of Durban, the team moved in, intercepting the vessel and deploying various units and resources to initiate a thorough search and seizure operation on an identified container.
The operation didn't end at the harbour. The identified container was carefully moved to a warehouse in southern Durban, sparking a further investigation that yielded surprising results. Upon opening the five, 10, and 20-litre containers marked as white paint, something entirely different from paint was found.
Forensics teams discovered an unexpected sight of over 200 plastic-wrapped blocks of cocaine artfully camouflaged in the paint. According to Commissioner Masemola, the captured drugs were likely destined for Gauteng, possibly causing mass havoc.
Despite the significant seizure, no arrests have been made as yet. The investigation remains ongoing as the team strives to apprehend those involved in this high-profile smuggling scheme. As part of their effort to rid the province, and ultimately the country, of drug dealers, the team vows to bring swift justice to those responsible.
