Call to Action: South African Authorities Urged to Protect Whistleblowers Amid Increasing Assassinations

South African whistleblowers, acknowledged as critical “agents of justice” within democratic regions, are unfortunately facing increased persecution and assassination, a startling trend that has provoked a strong response from civil society. A groundswell of 27 international and local civic organisations have risen in solidarity with these persecuted individuals, demanding proactive protective measures from the South African government for its increasingly endangered "Human Rights Defenders".

On the 19th of October, the united entities, which included the notable organization groundWork, submitted a persuasive memorandum to the government. During a discussion with BizNews, groundWork's representative Robby Mokgalaka painfully revealed that approximately 25 members of just one such grassroots organisation have tragically lost their lives, executed in an alarmingly systematic manner.

Mokgalaka further highlighted the grisly murders of several activists, including a woman brutally murdered within her own dwelling, witnessed by her 13-year-old nephew, and a man killed by assilants impersonating law enforcement officers, in the presence of his traumatized seven-year-old child.

Mokgalaka emphatically challenged the government to recognize its constitutional obligation to enforce the safety of its citizens and address this emerging crisis through the development of special laws to protect human rights defenders, launching significant awareness campaigns against these assassinations, and taking swift legal action against their perpetrators.
