South African football legend, Bernard Parker's career hangs in the balance following a horrifying tackle by Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Bongani Zungu, which resulted in a gruesome leg break. The incident occurred during the Carling Knockout match against TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening.
An unapologetic Zungu's reckless tackle in the 58th minute of the game earned him an instantaneous red card from the match referee. Troubling replays revealed the severity of the tackle's force, leaving no doubts about the extent of Parker's injury.
Parker, aged 37, must now face a possible twilight to his rich football career, overshadowing TS Galaxy's victory. They triumphed 5-4 in penalties, paralleling Sundowns' loss on penalties in the MTN8 final to Orlando Pirates earlier this month.
Parker's astounding career record in South African football speaks for itself. Having played for Kaizer Chiefs for 11 valuable years (2011-2022), he made 283 appearances, scoring a commendable 49 goals across all competitions. Before this, he spent five fruitful years with Thanda Royal Zulu (2004-2009).
Internationally, Parker also brought glory to Bafana Bafana between 2007 and 2015, attaining 23 goals over 73 matches. Notably, his skill also extended overseas, having represented the Dutch Eredivisie with FC Twente in 2009.
As the football community reels from this unfortunate incident, our thoughts are with Parker as we await updates on his condition post-surgery. The harsh tackle on Parker serves as a sobering reminder of the physical risks inherent in the beloved sport.
