The Israeli-Hamas conflict, already fraught with complexities, was veiled in fresh uncertainty on October 17th, following allegations suggesting South Africa's International Relations Minister, Naledi Pandor, supported Hamas's incursion into Israel. South African officials, including Pandor, strenuously denied these rumors, confirming instead dialogue on supplying humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Despite being 10 days deep into the strife, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's stance remained balanced. While he criticized Hamas for their "wanton attack on civilians in Israel," he also questioned the Israeli bombardment of Gaza.
Local observers including South Africa’s Jewish community perceived their government’s position to be one-sided, condemning Israel for their occupation of Palestinian territory and supporting Hamas. Their outrage was fueled further when it was revealed that Pandor had conversed with Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh. The Hamas side apparently thanked her profusely for her support during the call.
However, the South African government, including President Ramaphosa's spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, categorically denied any such interaction. But this denial was short-lived, with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirming the call, stating that it focused on enabling humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Despite these clarifications, the alleged statement by Hamas thanking Minister Pandor for her support during their incursion into Israel has put the South African government under a microscope. Only time will reveal the truth and effects on these claims.
