A Nigerian national, Adeyefa Adedamola Adetoye, made a court appearance in Kimberley, South Africa, this week facing charges of human trafficking and forced prostitution. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane confirmed that the accused lacks legal residency documents, as his permit expired in 2018.

Adetoye, age 38, was compassed on Sunday during a multi-pronged, intelligence-led operation by the Hawks and other police units that led them to a hotel room in Kimberley. The Hawks recovered evidence suggesting the room was used for the containment and exploitation of human trafficking victims, mostly aged between 17 and 29.

According to the Hawks, the victims were allegedly drawn from Gauteng by Adetoye, with promises of an improved living condition. However, they were confined in the hotel and forced into prostitution. Furthermore, police discovered illicit drugs in the room, allegedly belonging to Adetoye, adding to the multiple charges he now faces.

The charges against Adetoye are severe, including assault, rape, compelled rape, and possession of illegal drugs, alongside the primary accusation of human trafficking. Moreover, his illegal immigrant status compounds his legal problems.

Adetoye communicated his plans to appoint a legal representative during his court appearance. However, the proceedings were adjourned to verify the accused's details before he can apply for bail. The suspect remains in custody until the next hearing scheduled for October 26.
