Despite a challenging start marred with funding obstacles, Gqeberha schools showcased exemplary performance at the Western Cape Schools Marching Competition, clinching over 17 trophies, with a significant victory secured as they snatched the 1st-place championship in the senior division.
The participation of the four deserving Gqeberha schools in the competition, scheduled in Cape Town on Saturday, was initially uncertain due to the withdrawal of funding by the Eastern Cape Education Department. However, swift resolution by the department enabled the transport and accommodation of the four squads.
The four triumphant schools that rose above the competition were Alpha Primary, Charles Duna Primary, Ndzondelelo High and Soqhayisa. The Gqeberha schools competed ardently against 15 other schools participating from across the Western Cape.
The CEO of Go Big Project, Addie Jappie, praised the Education Department's proactive intervention. Jappie stressed the department's pivotal contribution to the success of the schools, illustrating that without the officials' diligent commitment, the trip wouldn’t have been materialized.
Local non-profit organization, Go Big Community Development who initiated and manages Project Schools Marching Drill Inspiration, recognized their team's stellar commitment and the driven squads' resilience that facilitated the trip's success. Project Manager, Zee Agherdien, commended the learners’ determination amid adversity, proving their ability to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious.
This year's competition was a landmark achievement, denoting the first time an Eastern Cape representative - specifically a Gqeberha school - clinched the coveted 1st-place championship in the senior division during the Western Cape Schools Marching Competition.
