Transport Minister Illuminates Desperate State of Insolvent Road Accident Fund

The gloomy status of the South African Road Accident Fund (RAF), which has been technically insolvent for some time, has been underlined by the responses offered by Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga to parliamentary questioning.

Supported by a fuel sales levy in the country, the RAF’s primary objective is to provide financial compensation to the victims of road mishaps to subdue their medical injury costs. The fund, however, has become notoriously inefficient in delivering on its commitments; a concern that the Transport Minister's replies have undeniably emphasized.

Claimants often find themselves shoved into a prolonged waiting period before their claims are acknowledged and processed. This lengthy wait-time attaches a hefty burden on the victims, most of whom are often under significant financial stress due to their medical expenses.

Further compounding the matter is the extended delay experienced by medical practitioners awaiting payment for their services. This consistent lag in response time adds to the woes of the medical fraternity, who count on these payments to balance their finances.

Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga’s responses in parliament cast a sharp light on a painfully palpable issue, underlining the urgent need for corrective measures to streamline RAF’s functionality and efficiency to better serve the country's road accident victims.
