A devastating home invasion on Sunday night turned into a tale of swift justice when police in Humansdorp arrested four suspects just hours after an elderly couple was brutally assaulted and robbed in their own home. A 64-year-old man and his wife had been watching television when three armed assailants stormed their home, tying up the man with cable ties and assaulting him before locking him in the bathroom. They proceeded to tie up his wife in the living room and ransacked their home.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, recounts how the invaders fled the scene with the owner's firearm, household goods, and his Toyota Fortuner vehicle. Despite his ordeal, the resilient homeowner was able to free himself and ride by boat to a neighbouring farm to seek help.
With remarkable collaboration between Gqeberha, Thornhill and Kariega police divisions, the stolen vehicle was flagged and found abandoned near Thornhill, although the contents had been removed. Observant officers noticed another VW vehicle that was following the recovered vehicle, and successfully stopped it near Kruisrivier, leading to the arrest of three men and one woman.
Along with the stolen goods, Naidu reports that three firearms were also recovered during the arrest. The suspects, aged between 35 and 64, are due to appear in court to face charges of possession of suspected stolen goods and illegal firearms. With the ongoing investigation striving to positively link them to the home invasion, they also face the possibility of additional charges.
