In a significant development within South African politics, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the former Public Protector, officially joined ranks with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Monday. The announcement was made during a media briefing in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga where Mkhwebane pledged allegiance to the EFF's objectives and radical policies.

Dubbed 'Fighter Busisiwe Mkhwebane', the former Public Protector shared her commitment towards working for the total emancipation of South Africa. She emphasized her adherence to the party’s constitution and clarified that her joining the EFF was devoid of any personal or material benefits.

Mkhwebane's joining the EFF follows her controversial dismissal from her Public Protector role last month. This dismissal came after 318 out of 400 Members of Parliament approved a report by Parliament’s Section 194 Committee that deemed Mkhwebane guilty of misconduct and incompetence. The EFF voted against this report, calling the National Assembly's decision an abuse of parliamentary majority and expressing the right to take these matters to judicial review.

Despite past criticism by EFF leader Julius Malema in 2017, who regretted supporting Mkhwebane's initial appointment as Public Protector, the party now strongly backs her. Mkhwebane had earlier denied all allegations calling her a spy put forth by the Democratic Alliance and the EFF.
