In a bid to contain the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday for a meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi. During this diplomatic mission, Blinken underscored the United States' strong support for Israel while highlighting the imperative that Israel’s actions should align with shared values for human life and dignity, exerting utmost caution to avoid innocent civilian casualties. Further, Blinken elaborated on the necessity of these engagements, stressing on their goal to prevent the ongoing war from spiralling into a broader, regional clash.

The US State Department confirmed plans of Blinken’s second trip to Israel in a week, after concluding his intense six-country tour of the Arab nations. This confirmation was issued as Blinken engaged with President El-Sissi in Cairo, marking his final meeting with Arab leaderships on this trip. There have been growing concerns that an impending Israeli ground offensive into Gaza might trigger a larger conflict, carrying potentially disastrous humanitarian repercussions.

During Blinken’s meeting, El-Sissi indicated that Israel’s Gaza operation has gone beyond its rights to self-defence, mutating into a punitive collective action, as per reports from Egypt’s state-controlled media. This is reportedly the strongest pushback Blinken has received to date from the seven Arab leaders he has engaged with during this mid-east whirlwind tour.

Blinken responded positively to this meeting, stating that he had conducted "very good conversations" with Saudi Crown Prince in Saudi Arabia and here with President el-Sissi. He added that he has heard "a lot of excellent ideas" on future steps, inclusive of rendering practical assistance to the Palestinians caught in the Gaza crossfire.

In addition to the Egypt meeting, Blinken engaged with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Sunday morning, following up on talks with the leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority over the past three days.
