Cape Town police, in an operation linked to the National Safer Festive Season Operations, has apprehended a significant haul of counterfeit goods. Valued at R75 million, the seizure demonstrates the ongoing commitment of authorities to tackle crime within the region.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe noted that an additional cash seizure of R200,000 took place in a shopping center located in the suburban area of Belville, Cape Town. "Through heightened visibility, police are intensifying operations to deal decisively with crime and criminals in all forms and shapes,” Mathe stated. The effort forms a key part of the overarching strategy to maintain law and order during the festive season.
Crime combating efforts having been made more robust with the addition of 36 vehicles handed over to the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) in Western Cape by Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele. The vehicles will aid in increasing visibility in problematic areas where high criminal activities, particularly murders, are prevalent.
Activities under the Safer Festive Season Operational Plan include regular roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and tracing of suspects. Special areas of focus include gender-based violence, aggravated robberies, border security, by-laws reinforcement, road safety, and illegal mining.
Aiming to enhance service delivery, SAPS has inaugurated a service rating platform. The public can now rate the quality of service received from police stations across the country. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola encouraged public participation to improve police service delivery.
