The wave of mob justice incidents is on the rise in Limpopo, with the latest case being the tragic murder of a suspected stock thief. Limpopo police are now hunting for the culprits, a group that has been associated with the brutal beating and subsequent death of a 43-year-old man.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed by the police, was forcibly removed from his brother's house in Mabangeni Village by the accused group. Following the assault, the victim's lifeless body was dropped back off at his brother’s home, marking an end to the savage beating episode.
The Polokwane law enforcers confirmed that the mob, which consisted of an unascertained number of people, targeted the 43-year-old based on accusations of stock theft from a nearby village. None of the suspects involved so far have been identified.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed her deep concern regarding the act. Condemning the incident, she said, "Our officers are working diligently to gather information and locate the suspects who committed this heinous act. We urge the community to come forward with any information that may assist us in our efforts.”
This incident comes in the wake of several other related episodes of mob justice in the area. In mid-August, another mob in Hasani Mbhalati village assaulted and burnt a 25-year-old man, accused of involved in the murder of a local woman.
The prevalent "take justice into our own hands" mentality has brought about an alarming spike in the murder rate. According to Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, a significant number of murders reported within the first quarter of the year were linked to vigilantism.
As investigations continue, locals are reminded to steer clear from mob justice behaviours, allowing the justice system to effectively do its work.
