In an unsettling event that shook Pretoria, a truck was reportedly hijacked on the notorious N4 Platinum Highway by criminals impersonating as Tshwane metro police. The culprits, decked out in police uniform and using a vehicle with Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) markings, successfully perpetuated the heinous crime earlier this week.

Detailed accounts specify that the unsuspecting truck driver was stopped near the R80 Soshanguve off-ramp by two men dressed in full TMPD uniforms. They deceived him by pointing out a supposed faulty brake light, following which a firearm was pointed at the driver. The driver was then directed towards a kombi (minibus taxi), allowing the culprits to escape with both vehicles.

Quick to quell the fears of the public, TMPD stressed that the two individuals were not associated with them in any capacity. Currently, the episode is under investigation. In light of these unfortunate circumstances, TMPD implores the public to be vigilant if pulled over by uniformed officers. To ensure veracity, officers can be asked to produce their appointment certificates.

Past incidents have morphed the R80 and the N4 highway into crime hotspots. A year ago, Juandre Kidson, a 25-year-old man, was gunned down by robbers whilst changing a tyre on the N4, in front of his wife and infant child. More recently, local residents blocked the R80 in protest of the rampant robberies. Their desperate plea triggered an undercover police operation, apprehending two suspects.

In response to the increase in crime, Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lt-Gen Elias Mawela, has reassured public by promising a surge in police visibility along the R80.
