British broadcaster, BBC, has officially reached a financial settlement with England cricket legend, Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff, following a severe accident during the filming of the popular motoring programme, Top Gear. BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the British broadcaster, confirmed the settlement on Saturday but refrained from disclosing the exact figures. Estimates, however, put the total settlement around £9 million ($11 million).
The 45-year-old cricketing legend and popular television personality was hospitalized following a high-speed driving accident during the Top Gear filming in December. His recovery has since been slow and laborious, meriting the significant financial agreement geared towards supporting his continued rehabilitation and return to work.
"We have reached an agreement with Freddie that we believe supports his ongoing recovery efforts, his return to work, and his future plans," a spokesperson from BBC Studios articulated, publicly apologizing to Flintoff and promising to extend continued support during his recovery phase.
BBC Studios, unlike other arms of the UK broadcaster, does not rely on income generated from the publicly-funded licence fee and operates as a commercial company.
Since the airing of the accident last December, Flintoff made his first public appearance in September, still presenting noticeable facial injuries. Despite his injuries, he was enticed into joining England's backroom staff for unpaid duties.
Flintoff, post his retirement from international cricket at 32, has built up a successful television career, including co-hosting Top Gear. Known for his audacious persona, he played a significant role in England's victorious Ashes campaigns in 2005 and 2009 during his cricket career that spanned 79 Tests and 148 one-day internationals.
