This weekend, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep concern over the current conflict in Gaza and its potential expansion beyond the borders of the Middle East while speaking to media after a meeting with the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC.
The ANC, according to Ramaphosa, has long been and remains solidly aligned with Palestine. "The atrocities unraveling in Middle East deeply concern us," said Ramaphosa. Remarking on the tragic consequences of the conflict, the President extended condolences to both Israeli and Palestinian peoples who are currently ensnared in the dramatic escalation of violence.
Calling globally for a solution, the President asked for the introduction of humanitarian corridors to provide essential supplies and services, such as food, water, and electricity, to the war-torn areas in Gaza. Ramaphosa warned ominously of the broader implications, emphasizing that this conflict could potentially surpass Israel and Palestine's borders and engulf the entire Middle East in a struggle the world is ill-prepared to manage.
South Africa is actively planning its response, intending to evacuate its residents. The Government, including the International Relations Department, the country's Intelligence and Defence Services, are closely monitoring the situation in Gaza. A national response plan is expected to be activated soon based on the Government's continual assessment of the developments unfolding in the area.
