A manhunt is underway in Western Cape, South Africa, following the escape of six prisoners from a magistrate’s court holding cell. While one escapee has since been caught, the remaining five, described as “armed and dangerous,” continue to evade authorities, raising security concerns throughout the province.
The prisoners, aged between 20 and 33, escaped while awaiting transfer to a correctional detention facility following court appearances last Wednesday. According to preliminary findings, the detainees managed to overpower a police official, disarming them in the process. Several shots were fired at the officers during the escape, though no injuries were reported, officials say.
Labeled as high-risk fugitives, the escapees were originally facing a wave of serious charges that included murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and assault. The recent escape incident has added attempted murder, gun robbery, and escape from lawful custody to their charges.
Authorities have stepped up their efforts to track down the remaining prisoners. The nature of the escape, accomplished on foot, has only amplified the severity of the manhunt. The public has been cautioned about these escapees due to their dangerous status, and the focus is now on ensuring the public's safety by quickly apprehending the fugitives.
