In an unprecedented development at the Absa Bank, two of its former employees recently plead guilty to their involvement in a large-scale fraud and theft case. Florika Owusu and Abongile Tyusha admitted to their crimes before the Gqeberha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday. The illicit activities, spanning from 2019 to 2022, involved fraudulent schemes amounting to over R1 million.

The individuals, in an orchestrated strategy, operated six bank cards amongst themselves and opened unauthorised bank accounts to facilitate their illicit transactions. These accounts were linked to debit cards, which were fake and used as part of the illegal operations.

In addition to unauthorised accounts, Owusu and Tyusha re-activated 18 dormant accounts, some of which were in the names of deceased individuals.

Owusu hails from Patensie while Tyusha is a resident of Butterworth. Both are scheduled to appear in court again next March for the initiation of their sentencing proceedings.

The case has once again highlighted the importance of stringent internal controls and vigilance in the banking sector in order to prevent such fraudulent activities.
