In a combined show of determination and vigilance, the police force in Gqeberha scored a significant victory over crime by arresting two suspects and confiscating tyres worth an estimated R3 million in two separate operations on Tuesday.
The police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, released the details, illustrating the pertinence of the operations. In the first incident, on-duty officers from Algoa Park and the Gqeberha Flying Squad observed the duo off-loading tyres from a truck on Patience Street, Sidwell. A rapid response led to the capture of the men, aged 51 and 53, and the subsequent seizure of 193 brand-new truck tyres. The police also confiscated a magazine loaded with live ammunition.
For the sake of thoroughness, the truck used by the suspects was retained for a comprehensive investigation.
Parallel to this, it was reported that members of the Public Order Policing were alerted to the suspected presence of stolen tyres in an abandoned building on Govan Mbeki Avenue, Central. Upon following through with the information, the officers found the location substantial and confiscated an additional 196 brand-new tyres. This time, however, there were no accompanying arrests.
Linking the two incidents together, Janse Van Rensburg said that the tyres, estimated to be worth R3 million, appear to have been stolen from a local tyre manufacturing company.
Facing serious charges, the pair arrested in the first operation is scheduled to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate Court this week on charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property.
