Locals of Johannesburg South experienced an unexpected tremble on Wednesday evening, as confirmed by the Council for Geoscience (CGS). Around 9:24pm, the Council's spokesperson, Mahlatse Mononela, announced that an earthquake had occurred, which managed to scale up to 2.5 in magnitude as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network (SANSN).
The specific epicentre of the earthquake, she highlighted, was positioned south of Johannesburg, falling in the western part of the Doornkop locality, encompassing Soweto as well.
Furthermore, CGS has put out a call to residents, encouraging them to recount their experiences and record them using an available questionnaire. This initiative aims to gather substantial data beneficial for future geological studies and disaster prevention measures.
Gauteng Weather had also made a public update about the tremor, taking the news to X, a social media application. They reported multiple recounts of an earthquake felt in parts of Johannesburg and West Rand around 21:25 pm.
It should be noted that this isn't the first instance of seismic activity in this area. Over the past few months, Gauteng has had a series of reported earthquakes. One such minor event occurred in July, with CGS confirming an earthquake in South Johannesburg that had reached a 2.2 magnitude.
