A tragic event unfolded recently as Palestinian property developer, Shafiq Naser, was brutally gunned down by unidentified bikers in broad daylight. This occurred near his residence in Sandrift, Milnerton, amidst peak-hour traffic. This brazen daylight assassination comes approximately a year after Naser's brother, Abdel Fattah Nassar, met a similar fate near the V&A Waterfront.
Naser, owner of Naser Construction was actively involved in the development of several buildings in Cape Town. Reports suggest that Nassar was linked with the Israeli underworld. Some say he had sought safety in Cape Town in an attempt to escape the violent gangland momentums in his previous abode.
Naser's assassination adds another grim mark to South Africa's burgeoning organized crime record. Recent statistics from the Global Organised Crime Index reveal that South Africa is the seventh-most crime-stricken nation globally – rapidly becoming a hotspot for organized criminal activities like drug trafficking, robberies, poaching syndicates, and violent mafia-style groups.
The dreadful incident happened on Wednesday, when Naser was driving his Mercedes-Benz SUV. Two assailants on motorcycles fired several shots at him after the traffic lights on Freedom Way. In his futile attempt to escape, Naser drove into oncoming traffic, hitting multiple vehicles including a Chevrolet Aveo and two bakkies.
This prominent assassination has deeply unsettled the local community with concerns rising for public safety. Milnerton Community Policing Forum highlighted growing concerns for the blatant disregard for anyone else in the vicinity during such hit attempts. Looking ahead, the forum hopes that the South African Police Service (SAPS) will act promptly to bring the shooters to justice.
The murder case remains under investigation by the authorities, as the motive behind the attack is yet to be established. The local police urge anyone with information to anonymously contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
