Fatal Food Poisoning Incident at Gauteng Spaza Shop Claims the Lives of Two Preteen Students

Devastating news rocked the Gauteng community, with Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, confirming the deaths of two Grade 1 pupils, who had allegedly consumed goods from a local spaza shop. The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday and the deceased attended Kgauhelo and Karabo Primary Schools located in Soweto.



In an official statement released by the Department, two more students from Ikemeleng Primary School are currently hospitalized in a critical condition at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. It is alleged that these children also consumed snacks purchased from the same shop.



MEC Chiloane expressed deep regret over the incident while extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He characterized the incident as a stern reminder to parents and guardians about their vital role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children. “It is imperative that we remain vigilant and ensure that our children are not exposed to harmful substances,” insisted MEC Chiloane, pledging continued collaboration with law enforcement bodies to achieve a comprehensive investigation into the matter.


Police have acknowledged the gravity of the report and have initiated investigations to understand the circumstances leading to this distressing incident.
