Hunter Biden, son of the current US president, Joe Biden, is set to step into a federal courtroom in Delaware this coming Tuesday. His intentions are clear - to plead not guilty to a series of charges, including illegally owning a handgun.

The 53-year-old is facing a trio of felony charges that link back to his 2018 purchase of a .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver. The charges revolve around two counts of producing false statements on mandatory gun-purchase forms concerning illegal drug use.

A third charge has been filed against Biden pertaining to his possession of the gun for 11 days in October 2018, before it was subsequently discarded. This charge is also rooted in the prior false statements.

Hunter Biden's legal representative, Abbe Lowell, spoke with the court about Biden's intent to plead not guilty at the 10:00 am (1400 GMT) arraignment on Tuesday that is to be held at a federal courthouse in Wilmington, the Biden family's hometown.

A previous arrangement of dismissing the gun charges in exchange for Biden pleading guilty to two tax charges was not completed. The initial plea deal's collapse resulted in federal prosecutor David Weiss filing the three felony gun possession charges against Biden.

Biden, if found guilty, could potentially face a lengthy jail term of 25 years. However, the typical precedent for such offences does not typically involve imprisonment if not accompanied by additional charges.

While Biden's legal problems continue to unfold, Speaker Kevin McCarthy has approved the onset of an impeachment investigation into President Biden following constant Republican scrutiny of Hunter Biden's business interactions in Ukraine and China.

Hunter Biden has not been formally charged with any crimes relating to his foreign business dealings. This legal predicament poses a potential threat to President Biden's upcoming re-election campaign.
