A private prosecution unit under AfriForum has been enlisted to contribute to the investigation interwoven around the murder of respected detective Charl Kinnear. This development is the result of solicitation by Western Cape anti-crime stalwart, Zona Morton, who flagged her concerns about police inaction in the murder case.
Morton expressed her solicitude over the rising attacks and murders on police officials, voicing her anxiety about the dangers faced by those dedicated to enforcing law and order. Investigations into Kinnear's murder had stalled, prompting her to approach Cape Forum, an affiliate of the AfriForum, to provide further impetus to the enquiry.
The brutal murder of Charl Kinnear, a fixture of the Anti-Gang Unit, occurred on 18 September 2020. The detective was laid low outside his Bishop Lavis home in Cape Town. For Morton, calls to the Police Minister, Bheki Cele, urging actions against police murders, have seemingly evaporated into the ether.
Foremost among the concerns are calls for the division of police capabilities from the national government to provincial authorities, a step advocated by Cape Forum's Heindrich Wyngaard. The goal, Wyngaard explains, is to ensure more efficient and concerted management of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Venturing into the heart of the bereaved family, Kinnear's wife, Nicole, speaks of the toll the delayed justice has exacted on her and her loved ones. She rues the failure of the SAPS and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, which resulted in the tragic loss of her husband. The elusive "highly classified" police report into Kinnear's murder represents another brick in the wall of governmental unaccountability. Nicole now places her hopes in AfriForum's private investigation to finally shed light on the truth and mend the tear in the tapestry of their lives.
Gerrie Nel, AfriForum's Advocate, who helms the private prosecution unit, acknowledges their active involvement in the matter. However, details have not been laid bare as yet, with Nel stating it is too early for additional insights.
