In a display of athleticism and determination, the South Africa Springboks secured a comfortable 49-18 win over Tonga in the Rugby World Cup 2023. The final pool game, played in the scenic city of Marseille, saw the Springboks outscore Tonga with seven tries to their credit.
Jesse Kriel led the pack with the bonus point try. Moreover, Marco van Staden relished in celebration as he bagged his first-ever test try. The first half bore witness to three triumphant tries by Cobus Reinach, Canon Moodie, and Deon Fourie, bringing South Africa to a comfortable 21-8 lead at halftime.
The second half didn't fall short of action or excitement. It witnessed Handre Pollard convert before being replaced by Manie Libbok at flyhalf. Willie le Roux and Kwagga Smith further stretched South Africa’s lead with additional tries, with Libbok proving his mettle by steering three conversions home.
In a post-game statement, Deon Fourie, the man of the match, admitted the team had anticipated a challenging match against the determined Tongan squad. Fourie also expressed his joy at performing in the hooker role. Meanwhile, Springboks’ Coach Jacques Nienaber acknowledged the team’s readiness for the result of other pool matches which will determine their future opponents in the tournament.
The victory propelled the Springboks to the top of Pool B, momentarily ousting Ireland. With 15 points in their pocket, the Springboks now await the result of Ireland’s forthcoming face-off with Scotland next Saturday, a game that promises to redefine the final standings of Pool B.
