Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa's premier football clubs, announced the appointment of seasoned coach Cavin Johnson as their Head of Development. From the onset, it seems Kaizer Motaung Jnr, the club's Sporting Director, played a significant role in Johnson's appointment drawing from their collective history together.
In reports that have surfaced from Siya sources, it's revealed that the Motaung family and Johnson share a long history that served as a driving force in the decision. Johnson was pivotal in the development of Kaizer Jnr during his youth, just before his transfer to Europe. Johnson was the mentor who transitioned Jnr from cricket to football during his time at Wits Juniors, and Johnson's coaching prowess at the junior level was instrumental in Motaung Jnr's journey into professional football.
A source within the Amakhosi fraternity explains, "Before he went to Germany, he played under Cavin and that's how he knew that he is an excellent youth coach. That experience with him at the junior level has helped Kaizer Jnr reach the decision to make the appointment."
The appointment has been long coming, following Molefi Ntseki's promotion to Head Coach. The club was seeking a coach who held experience in junior football and knowledge of youth-to-senior development structures. Johnson, remembered by Jnr from their Wits Juniors days, fits this criteria perfectly and shares the football philosophy of revered coaches like Ted Dimitru, Zipho Zangalala, and Sudesh Singh.
