South Africa's former Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, has been at the receiving end of over 70 negative rulings from judges during her tenure. Despite the overwhelming disapproval from the judiciary, Mkhwebane has refused to take responsibility for her actions, instead choosing to retaliate with unfounded allegations of gross misconduct against the judges.
Details from Mkhwebane's impeachment inquiry significantly highlight her hostility towards the judges who were instrumental in the adverse rulings that consequently led to her fitness to hold office being called into question. These revelations also shed light on the extents she was willing to reach in orchestrating public attacks on her critics.
In a shocking revelation, it was found that Mkhwebane, using taxpayers' money, enlisted the services of Paul Ngobeni, a proclaimed "fugitive from justice". Ngobeni was paid a hefty sum to author articles that portrayed judges such as Sulet Potterill and Ronel Tolmay in harsh, disparaging lenses, often labelled as incompetent racists. All the while, Mkhwebane did not disclose that her office was funding this purportedly "independent" analysis.
As the impeachment proceedings continue, South Africans navigate revelations of public money misuse and the systematic undermining of the judiciary.
