In a shocking incident that has left the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) community shaken, student Mziwenene Tinza was fatally stabbed by a fellow student on campus early Saturday morning. The grieving university confirmed the tragedy, vowing to fully aid law enforcement during the investigation.

NMU spokesperson Zandile Mbabela emotionally conveyed the institution's horror and grief over the violent incident. "Our NMU community is in deep shock over the loss of a member of our family. To Mziwenene's family and friends, we extend our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time."

The incident illustrates the urgent need to address safety within tertiary institutions in the country, a concern that calls for a combined effort of authorities and university administrations.

In light of the tragedy, NMU has appealed for calm and patience as law enforcement conducts a thorough investigation.

"We are hopeful that justice will be served for Mziwenene. NMU is committed to aiding law enforcement by providing any required assistance," stated Mbabela.

The assailant, who initially fled the scene, later surrendered himself to the police, as documented by police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg. The suspect is due to face a murder charge in court this Tuesday.

To aid the healing process, NMU is offering counseling services and other psychosocial support mechanisms to students and staff affected by the unfortunate incident. This move underlines NMU's commitment to prioritizing the mental wellbeing of its community during this difficult period.
