George Mildenhall, an 82-year-old resident of Jeffreys Bay, was found brutally beaten and bound in his home on September 13th, in the grim aftermath of a house robbery. According to the Police Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the elderly man, incapacitated from the severe assault, was discovered by his daughter. Following the unfortunate incident, George Mildenhall was hospitalised in Gqeberha, succumbing to his injuries only a week later, on September 20th.
The perpetrators behind this heinous crime were captured by the Jeffreys Bay police, just days after the incident. Two suspects, twenty-seven-year-old Zakhele Yake and nineteen-year-old Ria Maku, were arrested on September 16th at their home in Griffiths Street, in Oceanview. Colonel Naidu affirmed that household items taken from Mildenhall's Mossel Street residence were subsequently recovered from the suspects' premises.
Initially facing charges of house robbery and attempted murder, the suspects made their first appearance in the Humansdorp magistrate court on September 18th. Following Mildenhall's tragic passing, however, the charges were upgraded to murder during their second court appearance on September 22nd, they now await a formal bail application hearing scheduled for the 28th.
Major General Zolani Xawuka, the Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, lauded the swift response of the detectives and the valuable information received from the community leading to the successful capture of the culprits. He affirmed that the motive behind the act was mere robbery, a crime that needlessly claimed a life, and expressed full commitment to ensuring justice for the deceased.
