In an impressive display of proactiveness, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department successfully hindered an Uber hijacking, arresting a 30-year-old male suspect and recovering a KIA Pegas sedan. The dramatic pursuit and recovery took place in Windmill Park, Ekurhuleni, said Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, the spokesperson for the EMPD.

According to the reports, the Uber driver had received a trip request from Elsburg to Windmill Park. However, upon reaching the location and picking up two male passengers, the driver faced intimidation in the form of a firearm and a knife, which led him to surrender his vehicle near Cameroon Street.

However, luck was on the driver's side. Spotting an EMPD patrol vehicle, he courageously shouted for assistance even amidst the threatening hijackers. The quick response from the EMPD officers led to a heated pursuit culminating in the capture of one suspect on Aspen Street. The individual, now in custody, has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and hijacking, and is awaiting a court appearance.

Regrettably, the second assailant escaped the scene. The EMPD is on the lookout for the runaway criminal, vowing to leave no stone unturned to ensure justice. The confiscated items include the silver and brown hunting knife used during the ordeal.
