In a pronounced and strategic move, Jacques Nienaber, the coach of South Africa's national rugby team, the Springboks, has selected all four scrumhalves in the 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup match against Romania. The match, which marks the team's second Pool B Rugby World Cup face-off, will see Bongi Mbonambi leading the Springboks on the greens of Bordeaux.
Starting the match at scrumhalf will be Cobus Reinach, while Jaden Hendrikse will provide cover off the replacements' bench. Meanwhile, Grant Williams' versatility will be put to the test as he takes on the right wing, with Faf de Klerk providing flyhalf cover. The team split will comprise five forwards and three backs.
Retaining his place in the initial XV from the victorious 18-3 match against Scotland in Marseille last week is utility back Damian Willemse. However, he will make a role switch from fullback to flyhalf.
Nienaber justified the selection, stating that the selection of four scrumhalves was an intentional decision aimed at leveraging their skills and versatility to manage the challenges of tournament rugby. Key players such as Grant and Cobus can play wing, and Faf brings experience to No 10, enhancing the team's flexibility.
This flexible selection process, which has been in motion since last season, has equipped the Springboks with thirty-three players who closely match in terms of quality and skill.
