A 36-year-old suspect in the high-profile kidnapping of an American couple in South Africa has been arrested, according to Provincial Spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli. The American tourists, a 47-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife, were on their way to the popular Kruger National Park when they were accosted in the Calcutta area on R536 road last Thursday. Two men in a VW Golf, misguiding the victims with a flashing blue light, commanded at gunpoint the couple's displacement to a different location where they were consequently robbed.

Colonel Mdhluli reports that the stranded pair later found assistance and reported their alarming ordeal to the Masoyi Police Station, where a case immediately got filed. The multilayered dynamics of the case necessitated the involvement of a multi-disciplinary task team with members reaching out beyond South African boundaries, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Leveraging cutting-edge technology, the FBI provided vital information that helped trace some stolen possessions of the American victims which, in turn, led the task force to a residence in Kanyamazane. The suspect was apprehended there, found in possession of a variety of stolen goods, including an HP iPhone laptop, two iPads, an iPhone smartwatch, two sets of binoculars, a signal jammer, and the deceiving bright blue light used in the abduction.

Given the ongoing nature of the investigation, the suspect's name has been kept confidential for now. The accused will remain under lock and key until his court appearance pencilled in for the 19th of September.
