The persisting dispute over electricity tariffs between the residents of Swellendam and the local municipality continues to fuel tensions in this Western Cape town. This issue resulted in violent protest last month, with residents taking extreme measures such as vandalising properties and setting the municipal building alight.
This unprecedented outpouring of public anger prompted the drafting of a memorandum from the residents, making a plea for more affordable tariffs. The document was handed to Mayor Francois du Rand, who has since held a meeting in response to these grievances. However, the meeting tipped into chaos, with obstruction and vociferous objections obscuring the mayor's explanations.
"The resistance was palpable; they effectively derailed the meeting with their screaming and shouting," Mayor du Rand stated, citing the presence of the public order police as indicative of the heightened tension.
Khalid Sayed, a member of the African National Congress (ANC) provincial legislature, indicates that the party has been allying with the disgruntled Swellendam residents. He stated, "We echo the community's sentiment that the mayor's response was inadequate and failed to address any of the service delivery concerns raised."
In hopes of fostering a resolution, the ANC has sought a meeting with the community and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
