Following the death of the prince and founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Mangosuthu Buthelezi, expectations rise for Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini's imminent selection of a new traditional prime minister for the Zulu nation.

Prince Buthelezi's passing brought about concern for the future of the IngonYama Trust which reigns with administrative control over the land belonging to the Zulu nation. Consequently, the replacement candidate's political impartiality is viewed as crucial in maintaining stability within the Zulu affairs.

The successor's announcement is rather timely as plans for Prince Buthelezi's state funeral are expected to come into sharper focus today. President Cyril Ramaphosa upon returning from the G20 Summit in India will initiate this process. A gathering of the top brass of the IFP, Buthelezi's family and other significant personalities will lock horns in arranging the prince's sendoff, predicted to draw an international crowd.

Academics in KwaZulu-Natal have stressed the importance of this transition phase, citing the need for a leader who appeals to the Zulu traditionalists and can be relied on by the king. Speculation over a possible power struggle within IFP’s leadership arises with Buthelezi's vacuum. The decedent, celebrated as “a mentor, friend, philanthropist and father to many” South Africans, will be a challenging act to follow.
