Fresh insights have materialized in the Pretoria High Court that Major-General Shadrack Sibiya was integral to the Senzo Meyiwa murder case, post his controversial exit from the Hawks. State witness, Constable Sizwe Zungu, disclosed information regarding his discussions with high-ranking police officers about observations he made at the Vosloorus hostel on the ill-fated night.

According to Zungu, he spotted all five suspects, presently accused of the infamous footballer's murder, dashing towards the hostel, visibly armed, on the night of the incident. Meyiwa, the Bafana Bafana captain, was fatally shot at his girlfriend's house, renowned singer Kelly Khumalo, in October 2014.

In an unexpected twist, Sibiya had previously cleared himself from any association with the Meyiwa investigation in a conversation on 702 in 2018. Post his termination from the Hawks by previous national Hawks head, Berning Ntlemeza, he asserted: "I'm not connected with the Senzo Meyiwa investigation and have never participated. I can't fathom why my name is being implicated."

Nevertheless, Zungu's statement asserts that Sibiya attended crucial meetings regarding Meyiwa's alleged assassins in 2019, on the invitation of the senior police officer, General Vincent Leshabane. It was nearly half a decade after Sibiya's departure from the Hawks.

During the court proceedings, Zungu was interrogated about his meetings with Sibiya by the defense attorney for the accused. He revealed, "I was informed by the general that he was the head of the Hawks."

Last year, after a successful bid in the Labour Court, Sibiya was reinstated into the police force and advanced to the position of national deputy police commissioner.
