In Hanover Park, a man has turned himself in connection to the double murder of Haafith Umar Majiet and Haafith Tawfeeq Cummings, who tragically lost their lives to gun violence.

The suspect's voluntary surrender to local law enforcement is being further examined by police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, who confirmed, "We're conducting a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the suspect's connection to the murders. If linked, he will face charges in the Wynberg Magistrate's court."

Disturbed by the untimely death of Majiet, 25, and Cummings, 23, community leader Moulana Tohaa Rodrigues convened a public meeting. Rodrigues insisted that other potential suspects should be brought to book explaining that the surrendered man might have accomplices. He urged the potential accomplices to own up to their actions stating, "If I hadn't sent a strong message, there might have been grave repercussions."

IOL reported Rodrigues identifying theft as a possible motive behind the tragic killings. He mentioned that "R20,000 was robbed from the victims," and added the suspected thief might have shot the victims out of fear of being identified.

This community meeting served as a platform to communicate the improved security situation in the wake of citizen protests against crime. "We have not had a single gang-related shooting in three weeks," Rodrigues affirmed pointing to his plan of working with law enforcement agencies to evict criminals from community housing and rescinding city services to private residents involved in crime.

Councillor Antonio van der Rheede responded to the killings by expressing disappointment at the Philippi SAPS' lack of effective action in the area. “This incident has contributed to the negativity associated with Hanover Park," he laments. "People only hear about the crime, not the beauty".
