Kuils River Fugitive Driver with R170k in Fines Caught Following Chase

A long-standing offender, previously flagged by the City of Cape Town (CoCT) has been apprehended in Kuils River following an intense chase through a canal and vegetation. This unheeded driver, who had garnered a staggering 59 fines with a combined value exceeding R170,000 had secured his place on CoCT's infamous Top 100 list.



JP Smith, the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, narrated the thrilling account of the suspect's arrest. He explained that the offender, upon being stopped, abandoned his vehicle and opted to attempt an escape on foot only to be chased, caught, and presently held in custody.



Remarking on the severity of the issue of ignored warrants, Smith asserted that the Top 100 drivers had accrued 9,430 outstanding fines, amounting to an astonishing R9,129,180. Moreover, he elucidated that the leading offender owed nearly R300,000 in fines with an alarming 268 warrants.


In the first semester of 2023, the team managing the Top 100 list authored 14,773 fines, barely 2,000 of which were met with apprehensions. Among those dealt with, were a taxi driver with 18 double warrants valuing R78,000, and a motorist ranked 92 on the list with 167 outstanding fines amounting to R148,550, amongst others.
