In a twist of justice, Benjamin Klaaste, a 39-year-old man from Northern Cape, has been served with a hefty 20-year imprisonment sentence. He met this fate on the judgement bench of the Northern Cape High Court in Colesberg for the heinous murder of an elderly woman, Sophie Miles, aged 82.

The incident took place on the night of October 15, 2022, when Klaaste decided to invade Miles' home fully aware that she resided alone. During the break-in, Klaaste strangled Miles to death, leaving her half-naked and lifeless body to be discovered two days later by concerned community members.

The neighbor initially noticed an unremittingly open front door but didn't raise an alarm. However, two days followed with the door still ajar, prompting the community to assess the situation. The ghastly sight that met their eyes instigated a swift response from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Detailed forensic investigations identified Klaaste as a person of interest. The chilling findings suggested that the cause of death was strangulation, coupled with biting marks on the deceased's body. Klaaste was promptly arrested, tried, and convicted of his crime.

Senior State Advocate, Anel Stellenberg, pressed the court for a lengthy sentence, referencing the accused's callousness in targeting a defenseless elderly woman. Consequently, Klaaste was served a 20-year sentence for murder and an additional eight years for housebreaking, to run concurrently. He has also been declared unfit for firearm possession.
