Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) has been struck by a devastating inferno, resulting in a rising death toll. Current confirmations stand at 58, a number that is regrettably anticipated to climb, as emergency services and firefighters continue their tireless efforts.

The extensive operation to combat the blaze has been ongoing since it broke out in a five-story building located in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD. Emergency teams have been battling throughout the night enduring challenging circumstances, striving to extinguish the fire and save lives.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Johannesburg have been working religiously to treat a variety of injuries and severe cases of smoke inhalation. Spokesperson for the Johannesburg EMS, Robert Mulaudzi, confirms a thorough investigation into the root cause of the fire is already under way.

The five-story structure engulfed by the fire was a dwelling for several residents. It is believed, however, that the majority of occupants were illegal immigrants – contributing to added complexity in the rescue operations and subsequent identification process.

Johannesburg's respected Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda, is expected to provide further insights and update the public later today when addressing the media from the scene on the intersection of Delvers and Alberts Streets.

Please note, updates to this story will proceed as more information becomes available.
