The wave of support for Western Cape's secession from South Africa is accelerating, as evidenced by the latest poll showing over half of the province's inhabitants in favour of independence. This development follows the disbandment of the province's publicised Devolution Forum, resulting in the Cape Independence Advocacy Group stepping up their efforts.

The group is now insisting that DA leader, John Steenhuisen, fulfil his commitment to them by ensuring a referendum is held. In a recent discussion, spokesman Phil Craig provided updated research data and the group's strategy to push for a synchronic referendum on independence with South Africa’s 2024 National election.

Phil Craig affirms that this move is not driven by the identity of the nationally ruling party but is a long-standing desire for regional autonomy. Although the notion of Cape Independence may present narrative challenges for the DA, whose primary focus is national, it embodies a region-specific direction that the people of Western Cape seek.

According to the research data, an overwhelming 68% of those surveyed support the idea of a referendum concerning the independence of the Cape. Further dissecting this data reveals that 58.4% are in favour of Cape Independence itself. These figures reveal that the province's inhabitants are increasingly showing their desire to shape the future of their region autonomously.

Regardless of the criticism and opposition the movement may face from members residing outside the region or within the Democratic Alliance leadership itself, the Cape Independence Advocacy Group's mission remains unwavering - to advocate for democratic choice and facilitate a transition towards regional self-governance.
