Urgent Inquiry into the Condition of SANDF Troops in DRC Amid Crisis

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has officially approached Minister Angie Motshekga, calling for transparency regarding the situation of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers currently stationed in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This action comes in response to concerning reports indicating that SANDF troops are facing severe hardships, including limited access to essential supplies such as food, water, and medical care.

Reports suggest that while some SANDF soldiers were able to return to South Africa, receiving treatment for minor injuries, the condition and exact number of those still in Goma remain uncertain. Among these, some are suffering serious injuries requiring specialized medical attention – a challenging demand given the reported inability of local hospitals to handle the incoming flux of severe cases.

The situation has been exacerbated by the control of Goma and surrounding areas by the M23 rebels, complicating rescue and aid efforts. The real status—whether certain soldiers are classified as prisoners of war or are under rebel control—is still not clear. Moreover, questions have been raised regarding who is negotiating for these troops’ safety and return.

The urgency of this situation was highlighted during a postponed session of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, which is expected to convene in late February for a detailed briefing. Past sessions have seen minimal disclosures concerning the welfare of troops, provoking criticism from the DA of potential negligence or withholding of vital information by government officials.

Adding to the complexity, during a recent parliamentary meeting, both Minister Motshekga and Deputy Richard Hlophe showed signs of inattention, raising concerns about the leadership’s engagement and responsiveness to the critical issues at hand.

In his address concerning the state of the nation, the President emphasized the gravity of deploying national forces, especially into conflict zones, suggesting a serious reflection on the rationale behind continuing the deployment in such high-stake conditions without adequate support or potential evacuation plans.

The DA is persistent in its demand for a full disclosure regarding the number of troops currently in Goma and the conditions they are enduring. They stress the necessity for immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of the SANDF members, questioning the decision-making process that leaves them vulnerable in hostile territories.
