Escalating Crisis in Mozambique: Massive Prison Break Following Election Unrest

In a startling development amid Mozambique's worsening post-election crisis, a vast number of inmates have reportedly escaped from the maximum-security facility of Maputo Central Prison. The incident, occurring on Christmas Day, underscores the escalating tensions following the disputed presidential election results finalized in October.

The escape was dramatically captured in viral videos and has added a dangerous element to the already volatile situation in Mozambique. Local media, quoting varying sources including human rights activists and government officials, have reported wildly differing figures concerning the number of escapees, ranging from 150 to over 6,000 prisoners. This discrepancy highlights the chaos and confusion pervading the country's security apparatus at this critical juncture.

According to Professor Adriano Nuvunga, a prominent Mozambican human rights activist, approximately 2,500 inmates managed to overpower the prison guards and seize control of their AK-47 rifles. Such a severe breach in security speaks volumes about the current state of law and order in Mozambique, a nation that has seen Frelimo maintain power continuously since 1975.

The recent confirmation by Mozambique’s Constitutional Council of Daniel Chapo's presidential victory with 65% of the votes has done little to quell the unrest. The revised figure, down from an initial near 71 percent, follows intense street protests and widespread accusations of voting irregularities. These protests have sadly resulted in over one hundred deaths, casting a long shadow on Chapo's victory.

Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda described a grim picture of the security situation. Within just 24 hours of the prison escape, the country witnessed the deaths of at least 21 individuals, including two police officers, and numerous attacks against police stations and other critical infrastructure. More than 70 arrests have been made in a frantic attempt to regain control.
