Hawks Celebrate Exceptional Achievements at National Excellence Awards in Pretoria

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, more commonly known as the Hawks, held a dazzling ceremony at the Diep in die Berg Conference and Function Center in Lynnwood, Pretoria on December 7, 2024. This significant event, the National Excellence Awards, was orchestrated to celebrate the dedication, professionalism, and exceptional performance of its members.

Organized under the stewardship of the National Head of the DPCI, Lieutenant General SG Lebeya, the ceremony was not just a formal event but a heartfelt acknowledgment of the heroes in law enforcement who go beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety and security of the South African community.

The evening was split into two segments, where initially, the Hawks paid tribute to members who retired between April and November 2024. This segment included heartfelt commendations for their years of service and unwavering commitment to the objectives of the DPCI.

The highlight of the night was the acknowledgment of current members who had demonstrated extraordinary bravery and skill in the line of duty. Special recognition was given to the team that ingeniously thwarted a planned Cash-In-Transit heist in Makhado, resulting in a confrontation where 19 suspects were fatally wounded during a dramatic shootout. In this intense encounter, Lieutenant Colonel Coetzer, the team leader, suffered severe injuries, leading to the amputation of his leg. His bravery and leadership did not go unrecognized, as the night also marked his well-deserved promotion to Colonel within the Tactical Operations Management Operations (TOMS).

Lieutenant General Lebeya's address was particularly stirring as he highlighted the demanding nature of police work and commended his team for making it look "effortless." His words not only reflected pride and admiration but also a deep understanding of the sacrifices made by these law enforcement officers.
